Vermeer 5D, a time travel to 17th century Delft
until 15 February 2025
Time travel may not be possible in real life, but it is possible in Virtual Reality. From the point where Vermeer painted his View of Delft, you can now look 360° around the seventeenth century. Like stepping into a time machine. This way you can see what Vermeer actually saw and from which location he painted his most famous work.

Vermeer's place
There is much to tell about the Hooikade, where Vermeer painted his cityscape. Did you know that the tranquility of the View of Delft is apparent? This was one of the busiest places in all of Holland. With Vermeer5D you don't just look around. You also get information about what you see: about the prosperity that Delft experienced in this period, about pottery and beer, about fishing ships and exotic merchandise; about the many travelers and migrants who arrived here and took their first look at the city. And why Vermeer chose this particular place.
5D
Linking virtual space (3D) to time (4D) and information (5D) is a contemporary way of making history lifelike and accessible. A kind of Google Street View of the past. The Hidden City Foundation made the Vermeer5D reconstruction together with Erfgoed Delft and the Vermeer Center. The Province of South Holland also supports this project.
Onto the Market!
The house where Vermeer grew up once stood on the Markt. This house has also been carefully reconstructed and will be digitally put back in its original place and can be seen soon!
