27th Lichtjesavond Delft

Delft Verlicht 2024 kicks off on Tuesday, December 10th, with the 27th edition of Lichtjesavond Delft! This is the perfect opportunity to experience the city in a sparkling Christmas setting. Grab a delicious cup of hot chocolate, wander through the cozy Lights Market, and enjoy beautiful performances and concerts. There’s also plenty to do outdoors. How about fun theater acts and delightful Christmas choirs?
The festivities are spread throughout the entire city center. This means you can enjoy the festive atmosphere and the many activities happening all around the center. Read on to discover everything there is to experience!
The Markt
The Markt, Delft’s largest square, is the heart of the city, with the old Town Hall and the Nieuwe Kerk (New Church) as its impressive landmarks. During Lichtjesavond, there’s plenty to experience. Enjoy delicious warm 'poffertjes' and other treats at the food square, and be amazed by performances from the windows of the Town Hall. Discover the various theatrical and musical acts that bring the square to life!
A special highlight of the evening takes place at 5:30 PM, when the mayor of Delft reads an enchanting Christmas story for children by the Christmas tree. Together with the children, she will light the tree—a magical moment you won’t want to miss!
The Doelenplein
This year, the Doelenplein is the hotspot during Lichtjesavond! With atmospheric lights hanging in the trees, and the iconic large vase lamp adorning the square, it’s no wonder this little square is a favorite for many. During Lichtjesavond, you can enjoy a carousel, lively performances, a DJ, an illuminated nativity scene, and a variety of delicious food and drink options. The square also features a 6-meter-tall wishing tree! Nearby, in the Vaandelstraat, you’ll find a charming chirstmas market where you can discover even more and soak up the festive atmosphere.
Oude Delft & the brouwplein
The Oude Delft is the oldest canal in the city and is known for its stunning historic buildings, beautifully illuminated during the darker days. Along the canal during Lichtjesavond, you’ll be surrounded by ice sculptures and various cultural acts.
Planning to visit the Oude Delft this evening? Be sure to stop by the Museum Prinsenhof Delft. Here, you can enjoy dance and music all evening in the Van der Mandelezaal of the museum! The dancers from the Delft Fringe Festival will perform their shows back-to-back on a stage in the middle of the hall. The entire program lasts 50 minutes and will be performed three times.
The Oude Kerk (Old Church) will also be in full celebration mode during Lichtjesavond! In the beautifully lit church, you can enjoy all sorts of fun activities and performances throughout the evening.

The Beestenmarkt
During Lichtjesavond, this cozy square full of delightful terraces transforms into an enchanting winter wonderland. With a 6-meter-tall Christmas tree, live music, and glowing artistic characters, the Beestenmarkt is a must-visit!
Along the canals
Wander along the canals, explore the cozy squares, and don’t forget to look up to admire the lights. Stroll past all the charming stalls of the Delft Lights Market—perfect if you’re still looking for some fun Christmas items.
Tip! Don’t miss taking a walk along the canals by the Molslaan, where you’ll find an amazing light projection created by the TU Dream Team.
Zuidpoort & de Veste
Starting at 7:00 PM, a musical evening kicks off at OPEN. From a delightful musical created for and by children to various choirs singing cheerful Christmas songs and popular hits. Need a moment to relax? Then join the mindful music experience starting at 8:45 PM.
Nieuw Delft
During Lichtjesavond, the modern neighborhood of Nieuw Delft, with its innovative architecture and vibrant community, transforms into an enchanting winter wonderland. Arriving by train? You’ll be greeted with delightful performances at the NS station as soon as you exit the gates.
After that, prepare to be amazed by the Pop-up Expo in the Huis van Delft, featuring the Vermeer Recycle Project, where creativity and sustainability come together in a unique exhibition.
Continue your journey to the cozy square by the Social Hub, where a stunning Christmas tree shines brightly.
And not to be missed: from the new Huis van Delft, enjoy a breathtaking laser projection lighting up the sky, while the building’s atmospheric lighting offers a warm welcome. Come and experience the magic of Nieuw Delft on this special evening!
