Did you know that Delft used to be known as a brewing city? In the 15th century, the city had two hundred small breweries and by 1550, Delft was the largest brewing centre in Holland!

Beer and Delft have been linked for centuries. Today, you can still enjoy a delicious beer from one of Delft's breweries. Let the past come alive and enjoy Delft as a city of brewing!

Back in time!

Beer was one of our city's biggest exports in the Middle Ages. In fact, the oldest known brewery in Delft dates back to 1210!

The reason people used to drink a lot of beer was mainly due to the lack of affordable and tasty alternatives. Because of Delft's ideal location, with its easily navigable canals, the city could easily import the right products from around the world, making beer a lot more affordable than other drinks. The Delft export beer was especially popular because its peat water gave it a particularly delicious flavour. Toast to that!
